Making sense of Employee Engagement

“What is ’employee engagement’? And how can we improve it for our organization? Why does ’emotional commitment’ matter anyway? And how is it different from ‘motivation’?”  These are some of the questions I often receive. My usual response is this: Motivation is an external incentive to ‘have to’ perform. Engagement is an intrinsic drive to ‘want to’ perform. Much like romantic relationships, engagement is an ’emotional commitment’ with an organization and its goals.
